name of our spouse [01], others such as
Stefaan De Clerck[02],
Yves Leterme[03],

have forefathers with the same name. They all belong to the same Arent
stock.
The DEBRABANDERE/De BRABANDERE name occurs remarkably frequently in West
Flanders (some 1400 instances). The (recently reburied)
Bishop of Bruges Petrus]
(of
Ooigem-Wielsbeke) and Victor
[08] De Brabandere (of
Desselgem) also belong to the above mentioned stock. It is clear
that DEBRABANDERE means 'resident of Brabant' or ‘of Brabant origin'.

| In the 13th
century the Duchy of Brabant was made up of
what are now the Provinces of
Flemish and
Walloon
Brabant, but also included Antwerp and the
now Dutch
North Brabant.
The name comes from ‘brac band’ or ‘fallow
land’. Even today the
Belgian Crown prince
is Duke of Brabant. |

The earliest mention of the De
BRABANDERE name was found in the now French Flemish
Sint-Winoksbergen (Bergues).
Various family members were appointed to offices of
the Count in around 1300. One Jan De BRABANDERE fell
in the Battle of
Kassel in 1328. In
around 1400 they disappeared abruptly from the area,
but it was at the same time that they made an
appearance in Harelbeke. |
