Bruges, (21) Bishop Mgr. Petrus De Brabandere,
Ordained Bishop: 18 05 1894 |
|
|
  |
Mgr. PETRUS DE BRABANDERE, our new
bishop was born of highly respectable, Christian
parents in Ooigem on 25 September 1828. His
preparatory studies were undertaken in the lower
seminary of Roeselare, and on 1 October 1848 he
entered the main seminary of Bruges. Mgr. Malou gave
him holy orders on 21 May 1853, and he then studied
both at the University of Leuven where he graduated
with a Bachelor’s Degree in canon law on 24 July
1855, followed by a Master’s Degree on 14 July 1857,
and in Rome, where he spent a year to perfect his
knowledge. On 5 October 1858 he became assistant
priest at St Peter’s in Ypres, and on 17 May
transferred in the same capacity to St Martin’s in
the same town. Mgr. Malou summoned him to the main
seminary in Bruges in October 1861 where he was
appointed Chair of canon law. He remained there for
more than thirteen years, and from October 1864
onwards then stayed for another thirteen years as
Director of the seminary. |

In the meantime he was made an honorary canon
on 17 February 1867 and was appointed to the Council
of Bishops in October 1872 in the office of
prosynodal examiner. With the Deanery of Torhout
falling vacant in January 1875, Mgr. Faict nominated
M. De Brabandere as rural dean there on the 22 of
the same month, and did him the honour of appointing
him in person on the following 4 February. M. De
Brabandere stayed in Torhout for only five and a
half years before being called back to Bruges on 18
August 1880 in order to take up the position of
vicar general, which had become vacant due to the
resignation of the venerable Mgr. Bruneel. |

|
On 26 March 1885 M. De Brabandere became titular
canon, on 26 March 1886 canon-cantor, and then on 30 April
1890 he succeeded Mgr. Van Hove as archpriest. His Holiness
Leo XIII raised him to prelate of his house on 13 March
1885, and he was made Knight of the Order of Leopold by the
royal decree of Leopold II on 31 July 1890. On the very day
of the death of His Holiness Mgr. Faict, Mgr. De Brabandere
was chosen as vicar capitular and administered the diocese
in this capacity. In the secret consistory of 18 May 1894 he
was proclaimed Bishop of Bruges and was ordained by Mgr.
Goossens, Cardinal Archbishop of
Mechelen on 11 June 1894 in
his cathedral. May God bless him in his being, works and
deeds! May he govern for many years in glory and honour,
Godspeed! Ad multos annos!

Five bishops of Bruges have
been reburied (2002) 21-22 September 2002
"Het Volk"p.
11
On October 14 five bishops of Bruges were reburied in the
Holy Saviour Catheral. The bishops had been laid to rest in
a burial chapel for canons of the chapter in the town
cemetery of Steenbrugge. The bishops concerned being Faict
(1864-1894), De Brabandere (1894-1895), Waffelaert
(1895-1931), Lamiroy (1931-1952) and De Smedt (1952-1984).
"In the 19th century the custom of burying bishops in the
burial chapel of the cathedral fell into disuse” said a
representative of the Diocese of Bruges. “During restoration
work it was noticed that there was still sufficient space in
the burial chapel for the five bishops.” A service of
worship by the current Bishop of Bruges, (Mca)
