The ‘Stroppenommegang’ (Noose procession) Ghent 1993 the Ghent Festivities

Extra free edition of 'Het Volk' Friday 23 July 1993 'Ghent takes up its noose again' photo Johan Martens.
The procession of the Noose wearers is a reminder of the severe punishment inflicted by Emperor Charles in 1540 on the town of his birth.

Since five years the noose procession has been complemented by an historical evocation of Emperor Charles and figures of his time. Gilbert Ebo, alias Emperor Charles. Only those born in Ghent can take part.

The family feels that it has links with the Flemish cities of Bruges; Gent  and Bergues (Sint-Winoksbergen)
