Oekene is now a sub-commune of the town of Roeselare, at the heart of West Flanders.
Despite the fusion of communes this has always been a real agricultural village, although little by little, as elsewhere in Flanders, much agricultural land is becoming building land. Nonetheless people are determined that no great damage should be inflicted on the rural nature of Oekene! There are even greater plans afoot for the building of a multi-purpose event hall and hospital adjacent to the major motorway the A17/E403: Bruges - Oekene Roeselare - Kortrijk - Tournai/Doornik. The 16-km Roeselare-Leie Canal was dug between 1662 end 1870 to open up the industrial area of Izegem and Roeselare. The waterway was mainly used to ship coal to the industrial zone. Later the canal was to attract new industries associated with agriculture such as food companies end feed mills, end industries associated with construction such as cement works. In the 1930s and the 1970/80s it was widened and modernised. Over the past few decades the canal has also acquired some tourist and recreational value, offering opportunities for angling, water sports and boat trips. [3]
